Transport your heavy load safely and affordably
Before hiring a transportation provider to move heavy machinery or equipment, it is important to do your homework. Consider the following questions to ensure the best option in terms of cost and efficiency.;
- What is the company's background and history?
You want to be sure that a transportation company has a good track record. Look up the company's reputation on independent review websites. One of the best is the Better Business Bureau. You also want to look into a company's safety history. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) can provide this information.
Questions to ask directly include the type of equipment they specialize in and its availability. Do they have any current contracts that would make the equipment unavailable at the time you need them? If so, for how long? With this information, you will be able to plan accordingly or choose another transportation provider.
- Is the company insured?
You do not want to lose your load while it is in transit. But, the unexpected can happen on the road, including accidents and theft. As a potential customer, you have the right to ask a transportation provider to provide proof of liability insurance. You will want to know if the insurance policy covers only accidents, or if it also covers your shipment. Select a company who will provide maximum coverage in case of an accident, theft, or other type of loss.
- What is the cost?
Business is all about minimizing expenses and maximizing returns. You want to choose the most cost-effective option. Compare the cost of the top three transportation companies you are considering using.
Most of them will not only provide transportation services, but will also audit your shipment, package it for safety, load it up, transport it and unload it. Ensure the company you choose provides all these services so you don't incur the extra cost of paying for those that they don't offer such as unloading.
- Checks and balances
You cannot just send a transportation provider to a location to pick up your load and transport it to another location. You have to take care of certain logistics and the company should also do their part. You may even hire a field engineer to carry out an evaluation and inspection of your machinery or other load and compile a safety report. They should also take photos.The transportation provider will most likely have someone who does this and the two reports should match.
This will be your safeguard in case something goes wrong. The load should be inspected once it arrives as well and everything should be as it was before it was dispatched.
